What got you interested in this field?

I’m a coach at heart. I’ve always had an interest in helping people identify and achieve their goals. At the professional level, that happens every day as I work with clients to map out their financial future and then set and achieve goals that are meaningful to them. It happens at the “dad” level too on the soccer field as I work with grade school players.

In order to be a good coach, I’ve learned to listen really well. It’s knowing my clients, their passions, goals, and concerns, that enables me to help them develop and execute a deeply personal financial game plan in a complex environment. That includes an investment portfolio tailored to their age and goals, as well as strategies to protect their investments over the long term, address tax implications at each stage, and make sure that their estate is well ordered for themselves and future generations.

It’s coaching my clients about their finances for sure, but it’s much more than that too. I consider it a great privilege to walk alongside individuals and families helping them design the life they desire, using finances as a key tool.

Focus Area

As a business owner, I have a passion for serving those who own and operate small and family businesses. I particularly love to help clients who are looking to transition out of their ownership role or to sell their business. My objective is to make sure their plan is in alignment with their values and goals. Working alongside my father for years and then being a part of the leadership transition at CapTrust has given me intimate knowledge of the dynamics that arise during a transition, and also the amazing possibilities for stewardship that exist. For business owners looking to transition into the next phase of life or to try their hand at something new, I’m here to be a sounding board and to help ensure their plan is comprehensive and synced with their overarching goals.

I’ve also been privileged to walk alongside many widows, advising them during a deeply difficult time. The loss of a spouse can be overwhelming, and I feel that God has prepared and equipped me to be a steadying resource in these seasons, and to help simplify and clarify all the financial concerns that arise.

Family

After living out of state for a few years after college, I’m so glad to be back home in west Michigan. My wife Rachel and I make our home in Zeeland with our three kids: Brendon Jr., Keara, and Rori. We love our neighborhood and friends, and the ability to walk the kids to school at Zeeland Christian.

Hobbies and Relaxation

What’s better than pure Michigan for outdoor adventure? I love playing golf for as long as the season lasts and riding my motorcycle. Then when the snow comes, you’ll find me skiing in northern Michigan or out west (Meet me in Jackson Hole?). We love to ski and travel as a family too, and it’s been a joy to take my kids on solo adventures as they get a little older.
